At Optimal Sustainability Advisors, we are thrilled to see the launch of the Thrive Initiative, which comes with an €85 million investment aimed at revitalizing Ireland’s heritage buildings. The initiative is an important step towards preserving our country’s rich history while embracing sustainable development. As a company that champions the "do no harm" principle, we are particularly excited to witness projects that breathe new life into historical structures, regenerating them in a way that respects both their cultural significance and environmental impact.
We firmly believe that sustainability is key to ensuring the longevity and resilience of our communities. That’s why we’re proud to be part of an initiative that not only honours Ireland’s architectural heritage but also supports sustainable growth and climate resilience. Through our services in climate mitigation and climate vulnerability risk assessments (CVRA), we are helping businesses and organizations prepare for the future, creating sustainable solutions that preserve the past while protecting the future.
What is the Thrive Initiative?
The THRIVE Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme is a holistic and strategic approach to urban regeneration. It focuses on transforming town centres into vibrant, multifunctional hubs that serve as living, working, and recreational spaces for the community. This ambitious scheme supports locally developed plans that align with the following core principles:
1. Integrated Strategic Approach
The Thrive Initiative encourages a comprehensive and collaborative planning process, which involves local authorities, communities, and stakeholders working together to create sustainable, cohesive regeneration plans. It is all about addressing the multifaceted needs of town centre revitalization, ensuring that economic, social, cultural, and environmental factors are balanced for the benefit of all.
2. Viable and Vibrant Town Centres
One of the key goals of Thrive is to make town centres lively and attractive places to live and visit. By supporting projects that enhance the economic, social, and recreational functions of these spaces, the scheme aims to breathe new life into our towns, creating destinations that foster a strong sense of community and local pride.
3. New European Bauhaus Principles
The Thrive initiative embraces the New European Bauhaus Principles, which aim to embed beauty, sustainability, and inclusivity into all projects. These principles guide the creation of aesthetically pleasing, environmentally friendly, and socially inclusive spaces that contribute to the wellbeing of communities while minimizing environmental impact.

Ensuring Sustainable Regeneration
A core feature of the Thrive initiative is its focus on sustainability. As part of the application process, activities funded under Thrive must align with the environmental objectives outlined in Regulation (EU) 2020/852, ensuring that no significant harm is caused to the environment. This makes Thrive projects not only about preserving our heritage but also about driving climate action. The key sustainability criteria include:
Energy Efficiency: Projects must prioritize energy-saving technologies and systems that reduce consumption and lower carbon emissions.
Sustainable Materials: The use of sustainable, locally sourced materials is encouraged to minimize environmental impact.
Climate Resilience: Designs must be adaptable to the impacts of climate change, ensuring long-term durability.
Renewable Energy: Projects should incorporate renewable energy solutions where possible.
Waste Reduction: Strategies that reduce waste throughout the design and construction process are essential.
Climate Vulnerability Risk Assessments (CVRA): Ensuring that projects are prepared to withstand the effects of climate change.
These criteria ensure that projects funded under the Thrive scheme preserve not just Ireland's cultural heritage but also its natural environment, advancing the broader goals of Ireland’s Town Centre First policy. This policy, part of the government’s larger agenda to revitalize town centres, promotes sustainable, community-driven regeneration throughout the country.
